A small, historic crossroads settlement that dates to the mid-1800’s is home to several churches, a collection of early 20th century homes, a general store and Homestead Gardens, a large retail nursery and greenhouse operation. The surrounding area for miles in all directions was farmland. Development moving across the farms of southern and central Anne Arundel County reached the Davidsonville area first. Throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s, subdivision of farmland into 2 acre lots was in full swing in the Davidsonville area. In Anne Arundel County, it’s closest to Rt.50, a major commuting route to Washington D.C. There are more and larger neighborhoods on 2+ acre lots in Davidsonville than anywhere else in the County. The heart of this little enclave is Rockhold Creek with its charter fishing fleet, marinas and restaurants. Boats line both sides of the “creek” as far as the eye can see as you cross the bridge on Rt. 256. You can choose from Happy Harbor Restaurant, where most of the fishing boats are, Calypso Bay, Petie Greens, South County Café, or Skippers Restaurant with a tiki bar on the dock. Small, local businesses serve the area very well and a friendly atmosphere is apparent everywhere. Mostly older, established neighborhoods provide lots of housing choices and waterfront properties including Deale Beach, Rest Haven, Mimosa Cove, Owings Beach, Masons Beach & North Deale.
Located just south of Annapolis, Edgewater is a residential and commercial center that definitely lives up to its name! Waterfront communities abound along the shores of South River, Rhode River and their tributaries with such illustrious names as Almshouse Creek, Warehouse Creek and Bear Neck Creek. Neighborhoods established in the 1920’s like Edgewater Beach, Woodland Beach, Beverly Beach and Cloverlea are interspersed with more recently built waterfront communities such as South River Landing and Homeport. Views can be spectacular, many homes have private piers and boating access to Chesapeake Bay is excellent. In 2013, waterfront prices start at about $400,000 and go way up from there. Off the water, properties are available in every price range from about $175,000 to $1 million or more.
Galesville is a quaint village bordered on three sides by the waters of West River, Lerch Creek and Tenthouse Creek. Originally settled by Quakers in 1652, a few homes were built on large plantations. Galesville began as a village when the great steamboats began plying the area in the early 1800’s, the Emma Giles being the most famous here. Main Street ends at the water’s edge and today’s visitor will turn right to Thursdays Restaurant on a pier in the river, or left to Pirates Cove Restaurant & Marina, West River Yacht Harbour or West River Sailing Club. In addition, about 200 homes, 2 other boatyards, an auto repair shop, an art gallery, the sailing club and a couple of antique stores make up the quaint village. There’s also a public waterfront park, post office, firehouse and Community Hall. Galesville is small so finding a home here is hit or miss. One never knows if the next offering will be an 1800′s Victorian, a 1920′s bungalow or a million dollar waterfront. Come

45 minutes from Washington D.C. and 20 minutes south of Annapolis you can discover a collection of picturesque and historic plantation homes and farms dating as far back as the late 1600’s. Cedar Park, Larkins Hundred, Tulip Hill, Larking Hill Farm, Mary’s Mount and Obligation can all be found in Harwood. Modern real estate choices include small communities subdivided into 2+ acre lots, mostly in the 1970’s and 1980’s. There are also homes scattered throughout Harwood on lots subdivided from farms. Just south of Harwood is Lothian with rolling farmland, forests and a few small communities of homes on 2+ acres. A beautiful drive or bike ride through Lothian would begin at Greenock & Brooks Woods Rd. near the intersection with Rt.408. Take Brooks Woods Rd south, right on Little Rd, then right on Rt. 258 to right on Greenock Rd and back to the point of beginning. At the western edge of Lothian, there is a small commercial area bordering the Patuxent River and Prince Georges County.
The area is scenic, especially where the two-lane Riva Road crosses the South River on a bridge. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.5 km2), of which 2.5 square miles (6.4 km2) is land and 0.46 square miles (1.2 km2), or 15.37%, is water.
This peninsula, bordered by Chesapeake Bay and West River was so named for its canopy of towering oak trees. Some were harvested for boat and home building in the 1800’s but huge oaks still shade nearly all of Shady Side. In the past, its inhabitants worked on the water and some still do, but the small communities of Idlewilde On The Bay, Snug Harbor, Avalon Shores, Westlee, Cedarhurst On The Bay, and Columbia Beach offer a mix of housing that attracts many who want a slower pace of living near the Chesapeake but within an easy commute to Washington, D. C. First time homebuyers can find many opportunities to own a home with a nice yard in a friendly, water privileged community for $200,000 to $350,000.
There’s no town of West River; it’s a piece of the zip code jig saw puzzle that slips into an oddly shaped space between Shady Side, Churchton, Galesville and Harwood. It includes, at it’s northern border, Owensville, on the National Register of Historic Places and at it’s southern end Chalk Point, a picturesque peninsula of mostly waterfront homes that was once a stop for the steamboat Emma Giles. Between are farms and the relaxed communities of West River Plantation, Cedarlea, Pennbrooke and Chapel Knoll. Tucked away is Shady Oaks with a marina and mostly older waterfront homes, appropriately situated under towering oak trees.
